Long Whatton & Diseworth Parish Council

Parish Council Welcomes its New Parish Clerk

The Parish Council has recently undergone the process of selecting its new Clerk and welcomes Samantha Lockwood to the post. She will attend her first full meeting of the Council on 1st September. At the same meeting, Doug Maas will say farewell (see article below).

Samantha, who likes to be known as Sam, was selected from 11 candidates who applied for the position. She is looking forward to the challenges ahead and to serving the people of Long Whatton and Diseworth.

The new contact details for the Parish Council from 1st September are shown above.

Planning Meeting 3rd November 2011

The meeting of the 3rd November was fairly brief, as the decision had been made to have the Planning Meeting at the beginning of the month and the Full Parish Council Meeting to be held on the 17th November.

Aside from the various Planning Applications considered, it was brought to the Parish Councils attention the need for Grit bins in both villages. The Clerk is liaising with Leicestershire County Council regarding this matter and will report back to Council at the next meeting.

A reminder, mentioned to all, that the Diseworth Beer Festival was taking place on 19th November at Diseworth Village Hall.

Parish Council Meeting 6th October 2011

PCSO Nicola Stanhope attended the meeting on 6th October. There were no Police reports in Long Whatton this month, but two incidents in Diseworth, 1x burglary and 1xdamaged motor vehicle. There had been other damaged vehicles along Clements Gate, however not all had been reported, the message from the police is to be extra vigilant, especially with the nights getting darker.

From the 17thOctober there is a NEW "non-emergency" police telephone number, which is 101. There will be more on this shortly in a report from the police.

The Chairman opened the Diseworth Village show last month; it was a brilliant day and a great success!

An Allotment Association Committee has now been formed and will meet regularly to keep everyone up to date with any matters arising.

Parish Council Meeting 1st September 2011

The meeting on 1St September 2011 was to be Douglas Maas last ever meeting as Clerk to Long Whatton and Diseworth Parish Councils. With this in mind the Chairman had put together a few words within his report; firstly "welcoming" the New Clerk, Samantha Lockwood to her new role – Samantha is relatively new to working in local government, but in recent months has been covering as Clerk to Belton Parish Council. Sam is looking forward to her new challenge and to serving the people of Long Whatton and Diseworth in the future. Secondly, it was the Chairman's opportunity to say "Good Bye" to Douglas. The Chairman thanked Douglas for all of his help and advice over the years. He had said that on behalf of himself, the Councillors and everyone who had had dealings with Douglas within the Parish's that he had been a pleasure and a privilege to work with.

The Parish Council would like to wish Douglas and his wife a long and happy retirement.

The Long Whatton Village Show had been a success over the weekend and all money raised was going to the Help for Hero's Charity. The Chairman wanted to thank Chris Byrne, as Chairman of Long Whatton Village Show, for his efforts over the last ten years. This year was to be Chris's last one.

There was also mention of putting together a committee/working group for the Allotments, for any future matters raised.

ALLOTMENT GARDENERS ARE REALLY DIGGING IN !

This picture was taken on 16th June and shows the tremendous hard work (and superb results) by the Council's Allotment tenants.
The picture below was taken in March - just 7 weeks on from the area being just a ploughed field.

The next meeting of the Council will be held at 7.30pm on THURSDAY 6th OCTOBER at DISEWORTH VILLAGE HALL.

Meanwhile there will be a meeting of the PLANNING GROUP at 7.30pm on Thursday 15th September at Long Whatton Community Centre.

Please don't let your dog foul, especially where children play. Please pick it up! Thanks.

On Dog Fouling ... we have been in discussion with the 'Clean Streets' Team at the District Council. Enforcement Officers are on the case. Official 'signs' have now appeared on Long Whatton pavements, hopefully to remind dog owners that not "picking up" is not acceptable and could lead to a fine. To report problems with dog fouling - please phone them on 01530 454545 and tell the 'Clean Streets' Team.

=============================================
At the Meeting of the Parish Council in August

NB: News reports from earlier months may be seen in ‘Long Whatton News' and ‘Diseworth Dialogue'.
For the full Council minutes (published about one week before the following meeting) – click on Minutes Archive and select year and meeting.

At the August meeting Councillors were first given an illustrated
presentation by Mik Griffin of the Diseworth Village Hall Committee about the
proposed developments at the Hall to ensure it served the needs of the village
better into the future. Councillors expressed their interest and support. This
was followed by information from Robert Ellis, Editor of ‘Long Whatton News’
about the way in which the ‘News’ works and is financed. Having previously
deferred a decision, the Council was now pleased to make a grant towards the
cost of running the publication.

Councillors’ concerns about the speed of tractors using village streets
(believed to be contractors’ vehicles) would be referred to the police. The
police are also to be kept informed of some minor but worrying instances of
vandalism and theft at the Allotments and vigilance is requested to try to nip
this in the bud. Generally, everyone is very pleased about the way in which the
Allotments are developing and the enthusiasm of the tenants. It was agreed to
carry out a number of improvements including some stock-proofing to the fence.

The Council was pleased to offer some financial sponsorship to Long
Whatton Village Show whose theme this year is ‘Help for Heroes’.

County Highways are being asked to install a dropped kerb in Main
Street opposite the Friendship Centre to assist wheelchair users. The
overgrowth of the adjacent hedges which cause inconvenience and potential
danger are to be reported at the same time.

A flurry of planning applications for the development of Donington Park
were considered. With little supporting information and conflicting interests,
Councillors provided a fairly non-committal response, though concerns had
previously been expressed about the manner of consultations and the apparent
pre-determination of the applications.

There had been 11 applications for the position of Clerk and the
Chairman reported upon the process and outcome, full details of which will be
publicised shortly.

In this connection, as I will hang up my Clerk’s ‘quill pen’
for the last time at the Council Meeting on 1st September, I would
like to say “Goodbye”. This is after a most interesting few years trying to
help the Council and residents achieve some of your desires for your villages.
I would also like to say “Thank You” to the Councillors, past and present, and
to everyone who has made me feel most welcome including those who have provided me with quite a challenge! I hope I have risen to that challenge in most respects. I offer the Council best wishes for its endeavours into the future and I trust that my
successor will find the task as interesting and rewarding as I have done.

Douglas Maas, Parish Clerk
