Long Whatton Speed Reduction Proposals

You have until 3rd September to comment on the proposals which cover West End, Main Street, The Green and Hathern Road. County Highways are currently consulting on these proposals and require any responses in writing by 3rd September. Further information from tsd@leics.gov.uk (0116 3058108). Or email the Parish Council - longwhatdisepc@hotmail.com - and a copy of the consultation with plan will be forwarded to you (Village.Mail subscribers will already have received this).

PLEASE don't injure or inconvenience your neighbours by allowing the trees, bushes, hedges, etc. in your front garden to grow over the pavement. Thank You.

Forthcoming changes to STREET LIGHTING: The County Council has produced a leaflet about this or you can look at the details at www.leics.gov.uk/lighting. The programme of change in the County will take 4 years and we will be consulted before anything happens here. Everyone will have the opportunity to have their say.

On Dog Fouling ... we have been in discussion with the 'Clean Streets' Team at the District Council. Enforcement Officers are on the case. Official 'signs' have now appeared on Long Whatton pavements, hopefully to remind dog owners that not "picking up" is not acceptable and could lead to a fine. To report problems with dog fouling - please phone them on 01530 454545 and tell the 'Clean Streets' Team.

At the September meeting of the Council

NB: For News reports from earlier months you may see them in 'Long Whatton News' and 'Diseworth Dialogue'. For the full Council minutes - click on Minutes Archive and select year and meeting.

Our Police Community Support Officer Nicola Stanhope reported on quite a substantial increase in crime in the villages. Villagers are asked to be extra vigilant, reporting anything untoward to the police, including such things as car registration numbers. There has been a spate of thefts of items from gardens in Kegworth and Long Whatton. Once again, keeping an eye open in your neighbourhood might help to solve this problem.

The Chairman reported on a successful Long Whatton Village Show. He particularly noted that the Tug-of-War had been won by a Diseworth team! Co-operation between the organisers and Coalville Wheelers Cycling Club helped to overcome problems during the clear-up on the following day, though there was one unfortunate incident which was reported to a Club official.

Preliminary consideration was given to details of the arrangements for the management of the allotments in Diseworth, due to be available at the beginning of next year. The proposals will then be discussed with prospective tenants at a meeting arranged in October. (NB: Anyone from Long Whatton or Diseworth may still register their interest with the undersigned).

Various actions arising from the recent RoSPA annual inspection of the play areas were agreed. Attempts by the Council to keep the garden area better maintained at The Cross in Diseworth have been frustrated because the contractor who made a start earlier in the year has withdrawn due to the state in which he found it upon his recent return. Councillors are looking at possible alternatives.

County Highways had been very helpful in dealing with questions raised by Councillors at a site meeting about the proposals for speed reduction measures in Long Whatton. The Council has formally welcomed the proposals but has asked that any detailed concerns expressed by individual residents should be taken fully into account.

As part of the Bill Bryson “Stop the Drop” initiative, the Leicestershire Branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England is seeking to recruit Parish Litter Wardens to whom a nominal annual payment would be made. Details are at www.thebigtidyup.org and www.CPRE.org and follow the link to Campaigns.

NB: The responses of the Council to consultations about planning issues can always be seen in the Minutes, published about 6 days prior to the following meeting.
